Oruko Amutorunwa (Predetermined Names)

According to the Yoruba tradition, children may be born with predetermined names which Yorubas simply call Oruko Amutorunwa. In this thread, we are going to be sharing some Oruko Amutorunwa and what they mean.

For instance, twins are believed to possess names naturally bestowed upon them.

In this case, the firstborn of the twins is called Taiwo, derived from Tayewo, meaning "the taster of the world." This signifies that the first twin ventures out to explore the world, and if they find it suitable, it signals the second twin, who is then named Kehinde, meaning "late arrival."

The child born after twins is named Idowu, followed by Alaba (female) or Idogbe (male). Ige refers to a child born "feet first" is of the common "head first". Ilori is used for a child conceived without the occurrence of a prior menstrual cycle.

Ojo (male) or Aina (female) is used for a child born with the umbilical cord wrapped around their neck.

When a child is conceived without the mother having a prior menstruation cycle, they are named Ilori. Dada is given to a child born with curly hair, while Ajayi, also known as Ogidi Olu, is used for a child born face-downwards. Olugbodi is given to a child born with six fingers.

Other natural names include Abiodun (born on a festival day), Bosede (born on a holy day), and Babatunde/Babatunji (father has returned), indicating belief in reincarnation. Female names such as Iyabode, Yeside, Yewande, and Yetunde mean "mother has returned."

The problem we are having is most people don't answer these names again. Our culture is not been taught and passed on to our Gen Z kids. Gradually, western culture is eroding ours. You will see our kids these days answering Mark Anthony. Mark(first name) Anthony(surname). This is not good at all.
